On the back of the box of the first Age of Empires there was some marketing spiel that went 'Play as the guiding spirit of a stone age civilization…' It might have been just a rhetorical flourish (if the competition is saying 'play a king!' saying 'play a guiding spirit!' is an improvement) but whatever it was it did cut to the heart of what you were actually doing in the game. No king ever sat above his peasants and ordered them to chop specific trees. 'Guiding spirit' is much more accurate a description of what you were actually doing.

In Victoria 2 your position is just as ill-defined, and this ill-definition confuses some people. One of my friends said that he had only recently figured out (after playing Victoria and the sequel for a combined total of a couple of years) that in the event of a successful rebellion (that is, one where your capitol is taken and your government changes) you don't actually lose the game. I figured this out way earlier because I was much lazier of a player than he was- I let some rebels take over on purpose and then discovered, to my delight, that I was still in control, just with a different ruling clique. I kept playing with a fascist government or whatever it was.

My friend (and I, until my revelation) had been thinking in the traditional strategy mode- protect the base, because if anyone takes it it's game over. Certainly being as disinterested as I was in a game of Starcraft would lose you the match. And my friend imagined that Victoria 2 was operating on the same assumptions. The fact that Victoria 2 doesn't operate on those assumptions, that it does, in fact, cast you as the 'guiding spirit' of a modern nation, is one of the game's real strengths. Instead of a straightforward me-versus-them contest, the player doesn't really exist in the gameworld (in fact, some people play entire games of Victoria 2 hands-off, picking a minor country in the middle of nowhere and spending all their time watching everyone else). Instead the player is one of many forces acting on the people- alongside the economic system, governments, political parties, and so forth. He has no intrinsic stake in what goes on.

Far from removing the player from the game and making him bored, I think this provides opportunities for players to engage on a much deeper level with the game. People are much less angry, for instance, about an improperly balanced spell in World of Warcraft than they are about an 'inaccurate' or unfun mechanic in a game of Victoria 2, because whereas the spell can be worked around- nerfed or whatever- a bad mechanic ruins not only the win-the-game type of fun, but the other types of fun as well, the watch-things-develop fun, or the try-to-change-history fun. It's much more than winning or losing a round of PvP or dying before a hard boss. It's losing an entire pseudohistorical playground. You can definitely play World of Warcraft and treat it as some kind of system to be tinkered around with or observed, but the game doesn't really facilitate that in the same way that Victoria 2 does. And for me, at least, being able to sit back or lean in and micromanage depending on my mood is a much more interesting proposition.

VSTEP and Paradox Interactive today released a new demo for "Ship Simulator Extremes", which contains two full playable missions, taken from both the Tourist Tales and Greenpeace campaigns in the game.

"Captain a fast craft in the Tourist Tales Mission, taken from the Tourist Tales Campaign, as you take tourists on a guided evening tour around Sydney harbor. Be sure you make specific calls at the magnificent Opera House, The Rocks, Darling Island and more as you take in the beautiful scenery. Don’t forget to bring your passengers back to their cruise ship in time, because after all, time is money.

Become a Greenpeace activist in the Greenpeace Mission as you sail Esperanza, the Greenpeace vessel, to the Whale Sanctuary in the Antarctic to track down the whaling fleet. Take direct action and approach with your inflatable boats to disrupt and stop their illegal whaling activities."

2K Games today announced that "Civilization V" has been shipped and is now available in North American retail stores and through digital distribution portals. In addition, a demo has been released, giving players a chance to try out the new installment before deciding to make a purchase.

"Civilization V takes this definitive strategy game series in new directions with the introduction of hexagonal tiles allowing for deeper strategy, more realistic gameplay and stunning organic landscapes for players to explore as they expand their empire. The brand new engine delivers a spectacular visual experience that brings players closer to the Civ world than ever, featuring fully animated leaders interacting with players from a screen-filling diplomatic scene and speaking in their native language for the first time. Wars between empires feel massive, as armies dominate the landscape and combat is more exciting and intense than ever before. The addition of ranged bombardment allows players to fire weapons from behind the front lines, challenging them to develop clever new strategies to guarantee victory on the battlefield. In addition to the new gameplay features debuting in Civilization V, an extensive suite of community, modding and multiplayer elements will also be available.

Sid Meier’s Civilization V is rated E10+ (Everyone 10 and older) by the ESRB and is available today on the PC for $49.99. A playable demo is now available to download for free. Additionally, the Sid Meier’s Civilization V Digital Deluxe Edition is available at participating digital distribution sites for $59.99, and the Sid Meier’s Civilization V Special Edition is available at select outlets for $99.99. EVE Online started a fundraiser for the Pakistani flood victims, in which players donate the in-game currency, PLEX, and on October 6 CCP Games will convert the contributions to real cash.

"CCP Games will convert contributions into cash and donate them to a relief organization assisting those affected by the monsoonal floods, which have already resulted in thousands of deaths and impacted millions.

In its first PLEX for GOOD campaign, EVE raised over $40K for Haiti earthquake victims.

This is quite the contrast to the big EVE news from last week about a player who stole $45,000 USD worth of in-game currency through a shady investment/theft scheme, and leads one to ponder the age-old question of ‘are humans essentially good or evil?’.

It also demonstrates that video games not only let people explore their basest instincts, but can also help players engage in more altruistic desires."

More details can be found on the official site.

In an unexpected turn of events the popular Good Old Games website (GOG.com), which offered classic downloadable games at fair prices, shut down this weekend. The currently isn't any reason given for the closure but a message on the website explains that the site might not be gone forever:

"We have recently had to give serious thought to whether we could really keep GOG.com the way it is. We've debated on it for quite some time and, unfortunately, we've decided that GOG.com simply cannot remain in its current form.

We're very grateful for all support we've received from all of you in the past two years. Working on GOG.com was a great adventure for all of us and an unforgettable journey to the past, through the long and wonderful history of PC gaming.

This doesn't mean the idea behind GOG.com is gone forever. We're closing down the service and putting this era behind us as new challenges await.

On a technical note, this week we'll put in place a solution to allow everyone to re-download their games. Stay tuned to this page and follow us on Twitter and Facebook for updates.

All the best,
GOG.com Team"

Silverlode today announced that a patch that will be released tomorrow will make the game completely free.

"Players who register at https://www.playsaga.com  will receive the same fully enabled account that was formerly sold for $19.95 on such sites as Direct-2-Drive. All former paid features such as the ability to form guilds, trade in the auction house and quest with friends will be activated.

In addition to free registration, all tournaments (which formerly costed tournament tokens to enter) will be free as well. Players will still win tokens for playing in tournaments, allowing for the purchase of rare and powerful items from the tournament store.

The Tuesday Patch will also bring a lot of new content to the game, as well as removing the old alliance restriction, which means players of both the Brotherhood and Order Factions can quest and chat with each other. Some of the additions include raising the nation level cap to 40 and the unit level cap to 15. New territory quests have also been added, allowing players to expand their kingdoms."
