Croteam and Devolver Digital today announced that a Linux version of Serious Same 3: BFE is in development and will be released on Steam with Steamworks integration. The game is currently scheduled to be released before the end of the year.

“Serious Sam 3: BFE is a glorious throwback to the golden age of first-person shooters where men were men, cover was for amateurs and pulling the trigger made things go boom. Serving as a prequel to the original indie sensation, Serious Sam: The First Encounter, Serious Sam 3: BFE takes place during the Earth’s final struggle against Mental’s invading legions of beasts and mercenaries. Set against the collapsing temples of an ancient civilization and the crumbling cities of 22nd century Egypt, Serious Sam 3: BFE is an exhilarating fusion of classic twitch shooters and modern gameplay features.

Parker continued, “The last time I had anything ‘Open Sourced’ I was in Thailand, if you catch my drift.”

Eurogamer posted an interesting interview with Viktor Antonov, former art director for Half-Life 2. Viktor explains why he left Valve, which many might consider a dream job, to work for Zenimax on The Crossing and Dishonored.

“Valve’s one of the greatest video games companies there is. Rich and revered, invested in staff – it’s a dream place for any game developer to work at.

That’s why people don’t leave Valve. Well, most people. Viktor Antonov left Valve, and he was art director for Half-Life 2. He conceptualised City 17, its suburbs and the alien Combine architecture and technology.”

Ironclad Games today released the first of several hero character trailers for Sins of a Dark Age. Today’s trailer highlights The Knight Vallamere.

“Descending from a long line of Knights in the Imperial Captial of Calan, Vallamere earned his knightship in the defense of the northwestern front from early Horen raids. An ambitious squire in his uncle’s regiment, he left home as a promising upstart and returned as a man…and a legend. Though certainly a capable soldier on the battlefield, Vallamere’s true strength lies in his ability to inspire those around him to overcome the enemy with a unified might and an unshakable morale. Fighting with honor, sometimes to a fault, allies gladly follow his lead and enemies always respect him. Immensely protective of his homeland and its traditions, Vallamere is an incorruptible local hero and is emulated by children all across the empire….”

Cliffhanger Productions sent word of a new Shadowrun Online Kickstarter for a new game that would focus on online play.

“While Shadowrun Returns is focused primarily on providing a great single-player adventure experience, Shadowrun Online—like the tabletop—is all about experiencing the awesome world and gritty atmosphere of Shadowrun together with friends in tactical but fluid turn based combat.

In Shadowrun Online players take on missions alone or together in the dystopian world of the 2070s, ranging from hustling a local Ork gang, to stealing valuable cargo from a ghoul-infested warehouse, through infiltrating a remote megacorp research lab to sabotage a top-secret project.

Players will meet and mingle in social hubs and (in)famous establishments, to form runner teams, and pick up missions. Runs will take place on beautifully detailed 3D maps, involving combat, stealth, and strategy.”

The Valve blog has been updated with a status update on the development of a Steam client for Linux and the porting of Source games. The company is focusing on supporting Ubuntu first but may extend support to other distributions. They have successfully ported Left 4 Dead 2 and have all major features of Steam working on Ubuntu 12.04 with apparently just minor features to add.

“Why Ubuntu? There are a couple of reasons for that. First, we’re just starting development and working with a single distribution is critical when you are experimenting, as we are. It reduces the variability of the testing space and makes early iteration easier and faster. Secondly, Ubuntu is a popular distribution and has recognition with the general gaming and developer communities. This doesn’t mean that Ubuntu will be the only distribution we support. Based on the success of our efforts around Ubuntu, we will look at supporting other distributions in the future.

After successfully porting L4D2 to Ubuntu, interest grew within Valve and, as a result, the team and projects we were working on also grew. Currently, our focus is on the following projects:

  •     getting the Steam client onto Linux with full functionality
  •     optimizing a version of L4D2 running at a high frame rate with OpenGL
  •     porting additional Valve titles”

A demo for E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy has been released on Steam and the game is 60% off during the Summer Sale.

“As a member of the strange secret society E.Y.E, you wake up after a fight in which your fellow teammates were killed. E.Y.E, an armed branch of the Secreta Secretorum is attempting a coup against the all-powerful Federation, a coalition of several worlds and planets that rule with an iron fist.

To complicate matters, E.Y.E itself is plagued with its own internal conflicts between the Jian faction and the Culter faction, to which you belong. Your loyalties are torn between Commander Rimanah, your superior and the chief of the Secreta who is a separatist with an unstoppable ambition, and the “Mentor” your friend and instructor. The “Mentor” tries at all costs to unite the two rival factions. In doing so, you are thrust into the middle of a fratricidal war frought with political conspiracies and quests for power in which different groups and megacorporations are implicated.

These troubles set the stage for an attack by an unknown force bent on destroying humankind.”
